A comprehensive introduction to tourism as an industry, a global perspective complimented by a focus on tourism in South Africa and our position in the world market. MODULE 1 - The global business of international tourism – Where do we fit in & how we compare.

Understanding a tourism business – Sharing responsibility for long term success.
This module is designed to give staff an insight and understanding into the key areas and realities of working in a tourism business, and the basic economics of making it successful and sharing this financial responsibility.  Once they have this knowledge they are better equipped to appreciate the context, significance and impact of how they execute their daily duties. Topics covered include:

  • Establishing a business and set up costs - ensuring a return on investment for all.
  • Marketing – retaining new guests and creating more job opportunities
  • Income vs. expenditure, pricing, cash flow, break even point, cost control and mark up –understanding the very important role we all have to play
  • Reservations, Dot.Com, tour operators, www and the internet – how guests find out about us what they expect and what they know before they arrive.
  • Operational standards and requirements – exceeding expectation each and every time.
  • Seasonal variations in revenue, occupancies & room rates – adding extra value.
  • Guest interaction expectations and feedback – knowing what guests want and making sure we deliver it.

MODULE 2 - Growing a tourism business – Creating a vision and becoming a market leader

Building on the general knowledge acquired in the previous module, this aims at developing work performance related skills amongst staff.  As staff develop an understanding of the context of their duties they are able to target specific skills that enhance their effectiveness and performance in the work place. Internationally proven business, personal leadership theories and development models are used to enhance skills and provide in depth understanding
Key components here are:

  • Vision – creating a shared vision that motivates and guides a team.
  • Team work and leadership – aligning the team into a wealth creating pipeline through leading by example and taking responsibility.
  • Competitiveness – Using teamwork and shared vision to stay ahead of the competition
  • Unity in diversity – understanding the ladder of inference and ensuring our differences are our greatest advantage.
  • Guest Interaction – the psychology of service and anticipating guests needs and creating service opportunities.
  • Sustaining performance – establishing a balanced scorecard to measure and maintaining our shared vision of being a market leader.

MODULE 3 - Developing & Sustaining Teams beyond 2010 - it's all about effective relationships!

As staff embrace the knowledge and understanding of effective management and leadership they are able to develop skills that allow them to effect real change and direction in business, ensuring constant growth and productivity.  The culture of service delivery, productivity and ongoing skills development becomes self sustaining.
Key skills addressed in this module include:

  • Personal and team values – determining agreed values that encompass all team members needs and managing peoples expectations on a daily basis.
  • Facilitating effective communication – creating the framework and tools to ensure that communication is effective and undersuests want and making sure we deliver it.

MODULE 2 - Growing a tourism business – Creating a vision and becoming a market leader
